I live on 8th Avenue up from Park, sorta near Oakland High. I've been hunting around for stairways and hills in the area for quick exercise and views and such. I've taken to riding my bike up and over the hill on LaSalle to Montclair and then back down Park but my only regular walking route so far is up and down Brooklyn Avenue to the Lake, then around the Lake and back. Any hidden treasures out there that folks are willing to share?
Cheers all! I lived in San Francisco for years but when I moved here in October it really felt like I'd finally come home. I promise to be a good neighbor..and I won't bring up the West Bay again in this Tribe...

I live and work in LA/Sherman Oaks now, and I always hear people down here saying rent/housing up in the Bay is MORE expensive than LA. This surprises me cuz even though I have a fairly decent place right now, I still imagine LA as being more co$tly in every way: living, gas/transportation, clubbing, etc. Anyone else had experience living in both Nor and So Cal?

Celtic Sands, a Pacifica-based celtic folk rock trio, is performing this saturday March 22nd at the SF Celtic Festival from 8-9pm at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Oakland by Lake Merritt. The band has appeared on Pacifica's Channel 26 and has a newly-released cd that just came out this February.
Celtic Sands is comprised of Lara Garner on harp, piano, tin whistle, recorder, bodhran and vocals; Ben Roberts on fiddle and mandolin; and Gomer Hendrix on guitar, fretless bass, percussion and vocals. Their style has been exciting audiences all over California with their combination of traditional celtic, with virtuoso improvisation, original songs, and the edginess of celtic rock. At other times, Lara's "sweet voice and...etheral harp" pulls the audience into a time machine, bringing us back to the time of the ancient celts, Irish legends, and Scottish castles.
Their new cd is entitles "Wild Horses" and can be purchased online on the group's website at www.celticsands.com or on cdbaby.com http://cdbaby.com/cd/celticsands. You can also see streaming video of their live tv performance on the Bruce Latimer Show on their website.
The SF Celtic Festival starts at 2pm and finishes at midnight. There will be traditional Scottish and Irish dancing, regional foods, great bands, Celtic handicrafts and jewelry. Besides Celtic Sands, other bands include Tempest, Cullann's Hounds and Avalon Rising. To find out about purchasing tickets, go to http://www.sanfranciscofolkfestival.com

Hi,

I've joined a couple of East Bay Tribes, investigated a few more, hoping to enlarge my circle of East Bay friends/partners in crime. I haven't found how to connect with people through tribes, and many of the posts are reviews, ads, rather than activities. So I ran the following ad on Craigslist Strictly Platonic East Bay, have gotten a few responses, and am reposting here. Please contact me directly if you are interested. I'll plan the first activity in the next couple of weeks.

Hey there, hipsters, geeks, freaks, misfits, nerds and average joes/jennies who live in the Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville area. New to the area, newly single, old friends too busy with kids/work/school/new lover? Tired of going to "The City" every night, and wish you had more “East Bay” partners in crime? Let's form a loose, yet tight social network of people who actually do things together on a semi-regular basis. We don't have to go across the bridge for fun every night--there’s a whole world of adventures to be had right here. But heck, we can also take turns being the designated driver for events in "The City" and dashing for the last BART train.

Things of interest: tiki bars, dive bars, classy bars, live music (Mysterioso, Damon And The Heathens, you name it), events at The Crucible, burlesque, non-mainstream dance (salsa, swing, 80's retro), events at Dolores Park, downtown Oakland warehouse dance parties, grooving at Luka's, trying different restaurants, movies at The Parkway, impromptu post-Farmer's Market picnics and paddle boat races at Lake Merritt, cocktails at Easy Lounge after the Farmer's Market, weird DVD nights with a smorgasbord/potluck of everyone's favorite take out, viewing the lighted boat parade at Jack London Square, yard sale treasure hunts (for Burning Man costumes), lazy Saturday afternoons at Jupiter with pizza/pint/live music, bring your banjo/accordian/klezmer for a backyard BBQ with live music jam session, tour of Hangar One (Alameda), tour of Scharfenberger chocolate factory (Berkeley), tour of Takara Sake factory (Berkeley), roller derby. Let's go!

ALL genders, races, ages, sexual preferences, marital/dating statuses, socio-economic strata, political affiliations, religions welcome. MUSTS: Non-judgemental (see line above), adventurous.

I shouldn't have to say this, BUT, this is really "strictly platonic"--not looking for dates!

The things I remember from my childhood are slowing disappearing from Lakeshore. Too much down there and not enough parking. I can't really blame them though as I would go to the one in Alameda or the remodeled one on E 18th. Bigger stores and better parking. I only live about 3-4 blocks from it also.

Read a blurb in the article that they would like to see a Trader Joe's there. I am thinking about writing a letter to TJ's supporting it. While I know the parking would still suck it would be better than me driving over to Emeryville or Alameda.

It's Finals! THE most important poetry slam of the season. This is IT. The top 4 poets from this show will go on to rep The Town in August at the National Poetry Slam 2007, in Austin TX. The line-up for the 2007 brOakland Poetry Slam Finals is: Lucky 7, N'er City, Dahled, Queen D, L. Abdul Kenyatta, Clarity, Jose Vadi & Aaron Gardner.

We need you to bring yer most enthusiastic hand-clappin and foot-stompin. We need you to come bob your head to the hip-hop & salsa stylings of DJ Agana. We need unbiased, fun-lovin poetry fans just like you to score competitors based on content and performance. In other words, Oakland Lovers, we need your support. And what do you get? You get a GREAT show! You get Oakland's 8 TOP Slam Poets! You get The Bay's TWO BEST hosts Nazelah Jamison AND extra special guest co-host Jamie Kennedy DeWolf! You get Vancouver's poetic & musical beatboxing phenom CR Avery! You'll even get MORE!! You’ll get blown away by the beautiful voice of Oakland’s own sultry chanteuse Noñameko. And after all that makes you a little light-headed you’ll get a chance to raise that blood-sugar back up with a slice of a famously fabulous Reuschell Cheesecake! To break it down, you get the most memorable poetry night of your life!! - so be there - see you at the Slam!!!

PLEASE NOTE THE LOCATION!!! The brOakland Poetry Slam continues its tour of Oakland’s finest venues with its FINALS show at The Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph, downtown Oakland). Back in the day, the Oakland Poetry Slam was held at this very venue (formerly called The Oakland Black Box Theater), and several of our finalists competed and made teams there. Even better than that – the last team sent from this venue went on to place 4th in the nation. Yes, it's a veritable moonwalk down Memory Lane. Don't you just love nostalgia?

A little more about the competitors:

Lucky 7 has represented both Oakland & Berkeley multiple times at previous Nationals and was a member of the Berkeley team that placed 4th in the nation at NPS'05 in St Louis.

N'er City ("Inner City") Host, Activist and student of the art of spoken word poetry has been blessing the mic for over 10 years. He is a nationally touring poet who has graced the stages of every notable poetry venue in the country. The last slam team he was on (Oakland) placed fourth in the nation at NPS '03 in Chicago.

Dahled has been on 5 different NPS bound slam teams since 2001 representing Oakland, Berkeley & San Francisco. These days he works with at risk youth and facilitates poetry writing and performance workshops at high schools all over the Bay Area.

Queen D, a native of Sacramento now living in Oakland, is a newcomer to the slam scene. She has degrees from SFSU in Black Studies and Liberal Studies and a passion to put her words in to motion; whether it's by spitting poetry for high school students with Youth Speaks or with performance troupe Clearly Queens.

L. Abdul Kenyatta was born and raised in Harlem, New York. He thought UCLA meant the University on the Corner of Lenox Avenue. He began writing as a youth performing and acting in New York and the Virgin Islands. His poetry is honest and original and always seeks to tell a story. He has written a novel - FIVE THOUSAND URGENTLY POINTLESS DISTRACTIONS and self published several chapbooks.

Clarity is a newcomer to the slam scene. She paints pictures with words for the blind, her soul bleeds on pages and her tears and laughter leave descriptions that let you taste the seas salt in her eyes or feel the stretch of the skin in your cheeks when she smiles. Poetry was and is her prayers and sometimes feels like God’s response to her fears, thoughts, and ambitions.

Jose Vadi is a 22-year-old writer from Los Angeles. He is a two-time National Slam Champion winning both the 2004 Collegiate & Youth Nationals. He was also the '04 Oakland Grand Slam Champion and is the former host and coach of Cal Slam. Jose published his premier chapbook, Anthony Hopkins is Yelling, in the spring of 2006 and continues to teach and perform poetry everywhere from San Quentin Prison to Capitol Hill.

Aaron Gardner last traveled to The National Poetry Slam as a member of the 2001 San Jose team. Since then he’s graduated from Cal, gotten married, moved to Oakland and opened a middle school where he teaches English. He’s kept an eye on the slam scene from behind the turn-tables at “Tourettes Without Regrets” where he’s known as DJ Fu**off.

We know it is a real long commute to Redwood City from Oakland, but think we'd liek to make that our home base and he will BART then Caltrain to his job. It may also be that we are carless for a little while. The Lake Merritt BART station looks like a good focal point for our home search, as he can then take the BART with only only one transfer to the CalTrain...

Can you tell me what neighborhood within a mile of the Lake Merritt BART is like? I had a friend who lived real close to LAke Merritt, but we always got off at the downtown station. Is it Condos? Is it kind of downtown like? Lil' houses? Thanks for your help. I will continue my online research, just thought Id ask here too :)

this eatery is brand new. . .open less than a week. i had the fried chicken dinner and had my choice of 3 ! sides. there was a bit of a wait for my dinner but the chicken was crispy and moist, although a bit bland. (a couple dashes of hot sauce fixed that.). the yams were sweet but not overly so, and spiced just right. the greens were very good and flavored with smoked turkey. the red beans and rice had bits of spicy sausage. YUM.

my dinner was modestly priced and the side order portions were generous. :)) i'd say i more than got my money's worth.
the service was attentive, and they are open to constructive feedback. they are open 7 days a week till 9pm.

Attention everyone. I am an Oakland filmmaker and I want to announce the premier of my first feature length film, "Stoner's Run" at the historic Parkway Theater. Please mark you calendars and support you local filmmakers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th 9:15pm
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Admission: $3

Come to the screening and meet the cast and crew of this no-budget indie film. And if you had the fortune or misfortune to work on this film, come see the fruits of our labor. Stoner's Run is what indie filmmaking is all about. No money, just vision, heart and commitment.

"Stoner's Run" is about a modern day stoner who has it all. But while partying with his friends one weekend, it all comes crashing down. While trying to score some weed, Bradley and his friends set off for some good times, adventure, and of course, weed. Little do they know that they have caught the attention of narcoticsofficers who are hungry for a bust. This little adventure will turn into a journey of epic insignificance and we learn that the good times aren’t always so good.

Is there anything like that around here at all? The closer to Lake Merritt the better, but I have a car so I will drive farther to find it if need be. Like the type of place that has a group of regulars that are there often just hanging out.
I am possibly moving to Oakland next month and was trying, as a few have already done here, to find a relatively safe place to live. I was looking at some new lofts on 26th and telegraph and was wondering if anyone could give me any general ideas about that area. It doesn't seem too far from Lake Merritt so that's why I put it in this group.

I live in Milwaukee right now but have lived in Detroit and St Louis....neither of which is known for their low crime rates so I'm not afraid of the normal hazards that come with urban living. I just wanted to know if the area above is alright, generally speaking. Seems to be on the edge of West Oakland, which I haven't heard many good things about.
Basically, i wanna get as close to the SF vibe as poss without having to pay to be there, and safety is a priority. I am a single female who will be coming home late from work and own a convertible car, so wanna stay away from the worst car break in areas, and any sketchy parts with men who like to harrass women on the st etc...i get LOTS of that and i am REAL sick of it! Nice coffee shops bars etc....which one a these 3 hoods do you think best fits the bill?

Dear District 2 Residents,

I am writing to alert you to a troubling turn of events and ask you to join me in taking action. Sansome Pacific, the company which bought the Lakeshore Albertsons lease, is preparing to sub-let to a tenant that is NOT A FOOD STORE.

The company will not tell me what store it is, but I believe it is likely a drug store. This is clearly NOT what is wanted by any of the neighborhoods surrounding Lakeshore Avenue. Over 800 people who responded to my on-line survey and over 100 people who attended my Townhall meeting stated emphatically that they want and need a place to shop for food on Lakeshore (with an overwhelming majority preferring a Trader Joe's).

When we’ve fought in the past, demonstrating community preferences, we’ve succeeded. Neighbors attracted Starbucks and Noah’s Bagels to Lakeshore Avenue and more recently discouraged MacDonald’s from locating at the Kwik Way site on Lakepark Way.

More effort is needed now. To take action to convince Sansome Pacific to reconsider its decision:

1. Send an e-mail message to: David Gustafson at dgustafson@sansomepacific.com to tell him how strongly you feel about this issue.

2. Attend my community meeting this Thursday night, June 22, 7 – 9 pm to organize our advocacy effort. The location will likely be Barnett Hall, behind Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church at 3534 Lakeshore Avenue. I will advise by e-mail if the location will be different.

I’m counting on you to join with me in fighting for a good tenant at this site.

My room mate has moved out kind of last minute kind of not, kind of wierd situatiuation (she wasn't sure if she wanted to go) So anyway, I live on the Lakeshore side actually about 2 blocks from Lakeshore. Rent is only $625 plus 1/2 the utilities. Room is available NOW and you can even get the last week in June for FREE!!! But I need at least a 6 month commitment and first and last months rent. It is a 2 bedroom 1 bath and can come furnished if you need it! Parking is on the street but is fairly easy, I think there was only once in 6 months that I had a problem. Walking distance from Albertsons, The Parkway, The Liquor Store, Grand and Lakeshore, and of course the lake and even Bart is only about a mile, not a bad walk.
Me/ I am professional by day and Burner by weekend, night time I'm not much...heh I am often gone on random adventures!

My roomates and I have have recently come to the conclusion that we have slightly more money than time, and that the time deficit is resulting in, well, a pretty messy house. I'm looking for a house cleaner, preferably a trustworthy person or small organization where the people doing the work get the fair pay at the end of the day. We are looking for a once-a-month general cleaning, (windows, floors, dusting, ...all the stuff we are so bad at getting around to.)

It's a 24,000 sq. foot house. It's not in bad condition or anything, we'd just like to reduce the amount of stress from looking at a floor you KNOW needs to be mopped and sighing because you don't have the time to deal with it.

greetings ~

inviting people of any gender identification, racial classification, musical taste, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, dancing ability, dietary preference, & most political persuasions who are compatible in two key areas to share a home (either yours or a new one we can find together) this will probably be a little long *sheepish grin* but after living with others most of life in one configuration or another, i've learned a bit about what's important to me & what i can offer a shared housing situation. i hope that by taking the time to spell it out now will save time in the long run by helping to enable a truly good match.

=communication= this is without a doubt one of the most essential elements of all of my long lasting relationships (housemate, friend, lover, etc) i deeply believe that if people are willing to truly communicate (both expressing their selves & hearing others) most issues can be worked out. i'm not saying that it's always easy (who likes confrontation? yikes! not me) but if we're able to talk about things as they come up & listen to one another without being defensive (or at least /try/ to not be defensive *grin*) we can probably come up with a compromise. even if we simply 'agree to disagree' at least everyone can feel understood. this is one of the reasons the idea of house meeting is so important to me. depending on the scenario, it can be something as informal as splitting a pizza & catching up to a timed meeting with agenda & facilitator (i've done both & many ways in between) but having a scheduled time to check in with one another creates a forum to address issues before they build into resentments. maybe you're annoyed i keep leaving dirty dishes piled up in the sink (which is highly unlikely because i prefer to do them right away *grin* but hypothetically speaking...) instead of trying to catch me sometime our busy paths cross & figure out a way to bring it up without feeling awkward or waiting until you’re resentful & we have an ant infestation (ick! one of the main reasons i try to do them promptly) you can bring it up at this special time we've all set aside to help keep our home harmonious ~ now who doesn't want to have house meeting? *lol*

=affinity for children= people who enjoy their company vs. just tolerating their presence. i'm not saying you have to want to live in a daycare *grin* but even before i had my son, i found i connected better with those who truly liked kids. my son has lived with others (besides just me!) his entire life (he'll be four in july ~ is getting to a pretty cool age where he loves to make up stories & tell jokes that don't always make sense to me but that i still often find strangely hilarious) he has a pretty good understanding of how to be a good housemate (respecting others space/things/food, cleaning up after himself & listening when asked to do/stop something ~ not that he does it right away 100% of the time, but he's mostly cooperative & doesn't pull the 'you're not my mommy, you can't tell me what to do' routine) he can be rowdy & rambunctious at times (can't we all?) & may need reminders of house agreements, but i'm a very mindful mom & don't expect my housemates to take on the role of parent (though i do encourage respectfully setting boundaries with him & will back you up if he challenges them) or be his best buddy (he may have different hope & it would be great if you had fun together, but i have no expectation of free babysitting ~ bartered or paid could probably be worked out if interested; but again, not at all expected) we're pretty busy most of the time (he's at 'school' from 8-4:30 & we try to be in our room for special time around 7) one of my biggest desires is a situation where everyone truly feels at home.

=details= i'm not too familiar with oakland (south berkeley has been my hub) but really want to live there. i'm really enthusiastic about the it's vibe & want my son to go to oakland schools. i'm drawn to places with character vs. polish (& /love/ fixer uppers!) i’ve tended to live (& prefer to) in the more 'poor' parts of town. we only need (& can really only afford) 1 room i'm lucky enough to have a guaranteed (if somewhat limited) income. i always pay my bills on time & find inspiration for creativity by not being rich. i’d prefer to stay around the 450 range, but will stretch (not beyond my limits, but can rearrange some expenses) for the right situation.

in case you still want to know more *grin* you can feel free to check out my profile & message me through tribe (it might take a couple of days to respond) thanks & happy house mate hunting!
